Been thinking of buying a 2015 or newer Mustang GT and selling the 996. Not sure why, aside from I’ve never had a V8, and it would be nice to not pay the Porsche tax (both in people thinking I’m a douchebag and parts prices), and I really like the current generation Mustang.

Obviously the Mustang is faster, and practicality wise it’s probably a wash. The Porsche has a huge trunk and that backseat to store stuff, although the Mustang has a fold down seat to fit longer stuff.

On the other hand, I didn’t grow up wanting a Mustang. I always wanted a 911, and have enjoyed having it, and I’m sure I will in the future as well. Also, my Porsche isn’t going to depreciate any more, where the Mustang still has a long ways to go before it hits the bottom. It would be nice to be able to go places without everyone having to comment on my car and how “it must be nice” or “how much money do you make” etc.

I could probably make the swap for around $7000-10000 investment.

What do you think, Oppo?

Parts price, I understand and if it’s beating you up all the time I can see wanting something newer and cheaper to maintain. Who cares what people thing, even in a Mustang those same people will just think you’re a different kind of douchebag.

I’ve owned/own lots of “douchebag” cars, WRX, WRX STi, E46 M3, E90M3, Audi S3, etc. People that think your a d bag because you drive xyz car, are just jelly.

It’s not really beating me up. I can afford it, it’s against my internal cheapness instinct though. Every now and then I think about what would happen if the engine D-chunked, had an IMS failure etc and the minimum 12k outlay I’d be looking at and j us t shudder.

I understand the jealousy thing and shouldn’t let it bother me, but damn it, I can’t get over it. I don’t like drawing attention to myself, I’m a fairly quiet person who dresses plainly and keeps to himself, socially I’ m awkward. It makes me really uncomfortable. That sucks, but it is reality. I figure everyone has owned or knows people who have owned Mustangs at some point. They are everywhere, even in the dead of winter I see them. With a Porsche, I maybe see 2-3 a week in the nice months and none in the winter. They stand out.

I’d be tempted to go Camaro, there’s a couple of 1SS and 2SS manuals around me that seem like a way better deal than the Mustangs.

Though I’d probably keep the 996, and get something else for 7-10K...

Used 2015-17s are very affordable. I test drove a 2018 GT last year and I loved it!

A lot of people think Mustang owners are doucebags too. But my advice..s top caring about what other people think and drive what you want. If you want to try a mustang, try it. You can always buy another Po rsche if you miss it or try something else. That’s the great thing about cars, there’s so many different ones to chose from and experience.

I like the current Camaro to look at, but I just don’t fit well and dislike the visibility.

Ah yeah, can’t argue with that logic.

I almost bought a 997 that needed a full rebuild (I didn’t know that until the PPI) so I understand the concern. I get the same way about the VANOS in the M3, but the best you can do is drive it and take preventative maintenance precautions. Both issues (IMS w/ 911s and VANOS with BMWs) are blown waaaaay out of proportion by the internet. Sure it can and does happen, but not nearly as often as people like to think.

Probably just the area, but I see a 911 for almost every mustang. I also don’t like attention from strangers but the M3 being Phoenix Yellow has made me used to it over the past 12 years, and now with the 02 everyone is looking.

hmm one will depreciate and the other has already depreciated a quite a lot... I’d save my money, and look for something a little more exotic..

I’ve driven all the modern mustangs at the track, as well as 996, 997, 991 and all the B oxsters/C aymen (I’m an instructor with 3-4 different organizations so I get to drive lots of stuff).

The Mustangs and Camaros drive close enough that they are just down to preference. They feel similar in power to a 997 with a little bit more juice than a 996. They handle better than you’d think but still fall short of a 996 (let alone anything newer).

Just watch out for excessively loud exhaust and a Mustang/Camaro will fade into the background.

Personally, I’d take any of the Porsches over a Mustang/Camaro but I wouldn’t blame anyone for making the opposite choice (they’re all nice cars with their own strong points).

I love this generation of Mustang. So much in fact, I plan to buy one next year, once my savings and their depreciated prices meet. Ford really hit it out of the park with this generation. They are certainly more GT than sports car and will probably lack felling compared to a 996, but they are a hoot. I’ve rented a few , and racked up quite a few miles.

I’ ve heard that in some areas 911s are everywhere. Here in NH, they are pretty rare.
I’ve addressed the common issues on the 911. When I bought it 2 years ago I had one of LN’s recommended shops go through it and do the full qualification for the IMS. Ended up needing chain guides and a few other miscellaneous things. Since then I’ve done the water pump and a bunch of other miscellaneous things. My car is solid. At this point its only major need is a new top, the rear window looks like garbage and the top in general is worn. That’s about $1600 for a new plastic window top or $2100 for a glass window and will be done in a few months when it warms up some.

Go rent one from Turo for a few days and see.

I understand what you are saying on both fronts but I wouldn’t make the switch unless the mustang really speaks to you.

Do you have room for a 2nd car?

Why not get both?

Of course, the Mustang might need to be a bit older to get it under the $7k investment that you were planning, but that also solves some of the depreciation worries.

For $7k, you could get an older specialty model in decent condition, like maybe a 2001 Bullitt or a early 2000s Cobra. Those won’t be as fast as a newer GT, but they might feel more special to drive. I had an ‘04 Mach 1 for a few years, and no newer car that I’ve test driven has matched it.

15 GT owner here, I also owned a 15 EB. What do you want to know?

Generally, they are fantastic cars. Neither of mine has had any real reliability issues, I’ve only purchased one part to fix something and it ended up not being needed (it was a $20 purge valve thingy, I cleared the code first and it never came back so I haven’t installed it).

Running costs aren’t the greatest, but not terrible. I lifetime average about 17 MPG in the GT. Tires are expensive, and I only got about 28k out of a set so I just replaced them for about $175 a tire.

But what you get is a good looking car that’s nice to drive with a raucous V8. I’ve been considering swapping mine for a BRZ as I’d like to do more trackdays and the aforementioned tire cost is a factor. The issue is I have a hard time letting mine go. I never was a Mustang guy until I bought my EB, the S550 is such a great car that it’ll win you over I’m sure.

Lol. No IMS fears for me. I took care of that when I bought the car.
